Maligaon, May 30 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a milestone in freight transportation with the commencement of its first-ever maize loading from Tufanganj station under the Alipurduar Division in West Bengal to Rudrapur City station in Uttarakhand.

According to an official release, 1,310.4 tonnes of maize were loaded from Tufanganj on May 27 for transportation to Rudrapur City, generating freight revenue of Rs 30.21 lakh.

NFR said the movement marked a significant step in strengthening agricultural freight transportation and enhancing rail-based connectivity between states.

During May, the railway zone recorded substantial maize loading traffic from stations under the Alipurduar Division, contributing to freight movement and revenue generation.

On May 15, a maize rake was dispatched from Tufanganj station to Bathinda under Northern Railway. This was followed by another rake movement from Tufanganj to Khem Karan on May 21.

Subsequently, a maize rake was loaded from Falakata station to Kharagpur on May 26.

The three rake movements together generated freight revenue of about Rs 90.19 lakh, the release said.

NFR stated that the successful execution of the new freight movement underscores the growing role of railways in strengthening agricultural supply chains and facilitating inter-state trade.

The railway zone said the initiative reflects its continued efforts to promote rail transport as a reliable, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable mode for moving agricultural commodities.

NFR further reiterated its commitment to expanding freight operations and providing efficient logistics solutions for farmers, traders and business communities.

Such initiatives are expected to encourage greater movement of commodities through rail transport while contributing to regional economic development and sustainable freight mobility, it added.
