Maligaon, March 20 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved significant progress in solar energy adoption, with total installed capacity reaching 31.890 MWp as of February 2026, officials said.

The solarisation initiative, launched in 2011, has gained momentum in the current financial year, with an additional 22.734 MWp installed during 2025–26 alone.

Among divisions, Lumding (including Guwahati portion) recorded the highest cumulative installation at 13.334 MWp, followed by Rangiya division with 8.941 MWp. Other divisions such as Alipurduar, Katihar and Tinsukia have also contributed to capacity enhancement.

The railway said the solar installations have yielded notable operational benefits. During 2025–26 (till February), the average monthly solar energy generation stood at around 9.18 lakh units, resulting in average monthly savings of approximately Rs 68.80 lakh.

Further expanding its renewable portfolio, NFR has 19.14 MWp of additional solar capacity under various stages of implementation across its divisions, with major projects planned in Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar and Alipurduar.

The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Officials said the continued focus on solar energy not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also ensures long-term economic benefits through reduced energy costs.
