Maligaon, June 7 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) unloaded 1,034 freight rakes across its network in May 2026, registering a strong performance in freight operations during the early months of the 2026-27 financial year.
According to an official statement, the railway zone ensured the transportation and unloading of essential and industrial commodities, including food grains, food-grade items, fertilisers, sugar, SNTP coal, salt, tank wagons and other goods, at various goods sheds under its jurisdiction.
The consignments were handled to ensure timely supply and operational reliability across the region, it said.
A major share of the freight traffic was meant for the Northeastern states, with Assam recording the highest unloading of 557 rakes, including 271 carrying essential commodities and 286 carrying non-essential commodities.
The statement said the unloading of freight in Assam highlighted the Railways' role in supporting public distribution systems, industrial activities and daily consumer requirements.
During the same period, 74 rakes were unloaded in Tripura, 34 in Nagaland, 20 in Manipur, 10 in Arunachal Pradesh, eight in Mizoram and one in Meghalaya.
Outside the Northeast, West Bengal recorded the unloading of 196 rakes, while Bihar accounted for 134 rakes carrying both essential and non-essential commodities, contributing to regional supply chains, trade connectivity and economic activity.
NFR said the movement of essential commodities and industrial goods remains crucial for meeting public requirements and supporting economic activities across the region. It added that close monitoring and coordinated efforts by field units had improved turnaround time and unloading efficiency, reaffirming its commitment to reliable freight operations and the socio-economic development of the Northeast.
