4 children among 6 killed by lightning in Assam

 Silchar, June 13 (IANS): As many as six people, including four children, were killed and two other minors hurt in thunderstorm and lightning in two districts of southern Assam, the police said here on Saturday.
According to the police, five of a family, including four children, were killed when the lightning struck their home in Ramkrishna Nagar of the Karimganj district on Friday evening. Two survivors, both children, have been admitted to the Karimganj Civil Hospital.
In another incident, a 62-year-old man was killed by the lightning on Friday while he was working in his paddy field in the Cachar district.

 

Schools, colleges in Sikkim to reopen in August

Gangtok, June 13 (PTI): The Sikkim government has deferred reopening of educational institutes by a month due to the COVID-19 outbreak and decided to resume classes in schools, colleges and universities in the first week of August this year, officials said.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting of the State Task Force presided over by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday, they said. The educational institutes in the state were supposed to reopen from July 1.
"There is a need for abundant precaution to resume educational activities in Sikkim in view of the spike in COVID-19 cases," the officials said. Sikkim has reported 63 coronavirus cases till Friday. The reopening of all schools, colleges, universities and teacher education institutes would be in compliance with the UGC and the central government directives, they said. Meanwhile, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had announced that the pending class 10 and 12 board examinations would be held from July 1 to 15. The examinations were postponed due to the nationwide lockdown imposed on March 25. These examinations will be conducted in all the senior secondary schools in Sikkim to maintain social distancing norms and avoid commuting to a common centre, the officials said.
Many students of Sikkim appearing for the CBSE examinations are stranded in other states and they have been instructed to apply for a change of centres in the districts where they are currently staying, they said.
Most of the candidates have already opted for the change of centres, the officials added.

 

ULFA (I) cadre apprehended

Dimapur, June 13 (MExN): Troops of Indian Army in a joint operation with Assam Police apprehended a cadre of ULFA (I) near Ouguri village in Dibrugarh district of Assam on June 11. According to a press release from the PIB (Defence), based on a specific input regarding presence of a cadre, the joint team launched an operation in the area and apprehended the person. The apprehended cadre has been identified as Babul Gogoi. The team also recovered one .22mm pistol, one magazine, eight cordex and 14 detonators during the operation. It is suspected that the cadre was actively involved in money laundering and recruitment for ULFA (I) in Upper Assam, the press release stated. The apprehended person along with recovered items have been handed over to Dibrugarh Police Station for further investigation, it added.

 

ZUF cadre arrested

Dimapur, June 13 (MExN): Troops of Assam Rifles along with Assam Police apprehended an active cadre of ZUF cadre of Kamson faction near Ramgaizang village in Cachar District of Assam on Jun 11. Based on input, the joint team launched an operation and apprehended the cadre, identified as one Captain Sikanpou Thaimai,  according to a press release from the PIB (Defence). The apprehended individual has been handed over to Jirighat Police Station for further investigation.

 

AR arrests GPRN/NSCN cadre in Dimapur

Dimapur, June 13 (MExN): The troops of Assam Rifles in a joint operation with Nagaland Police apprehended a GPRN/NSCN cadre near Niu Colony, Burma Camp in Dimapur on June 12. Based on specific inputs, the team launched an operation and apprehended the person, identified as one Deputy Kilonser S Vito Awomi, Chairman Arunachal Affairs of GPRN/NSCN). The team also recovered one China made .32mm pistol, two mobile phones and other incriminating documents, a press release from the PIB (Defence) stated on June 13. The apprehended individual along with the recovered items have been handed over to East Police Station for further investigations, it added.
