KOHIMA, DECEMBER 30 (MExN): The National People’s Party (NPP), Nagaland, on Tuesday condemned the killing of a North Eastern youth, Angjel Chakra, in Dehradun, describing the incident as a brutal and racially motivated attack, and demanded swift justice along with parliamentary intervention to address racial violence.
Expressing condolences and solidarity with the bereaved family, the party said the killing exposed a persistent and systemic failure to ensure the safety and dignity of people from the North Eastern region living outside their home states.
In a press statement, the NPP Nagaland said such incidents were not isolated but part of a recurring pattern of racial abuse, targeted violence and institutional apathy faced by people from the North Eastern states across the country. It said these acts strike at the foundation of national unity and cannot be treated as routine law-and-order issues.
The party urged the Uttarakhand government to immediately arrest all those involved and ensure that the accused are booked under the strictest provisions of criminal law. It demanded swift prosecution, a time-bound investigation and exemplary punishment to set a clear precedent against racially motivated violence.
The NPP Nagaland also called upon Parliament and the Government of India to urgently take cognisance of what it described as a grave national concern and enact a comprehensive central legislation to address racial discrimination and hate crimes. It said such a law should provide for stringent punishment, fast-track trials, victim and witness protection, and clearly defined accountability of law enforcement agencies.
Stating that repeated assurances without legislative backing had proved ineffective, the party asserted that national integration cannot be sustained if citizens are attacked or killed because of their racial identity. It said Parliament must act decisively to ensure that people from the North Eastern region do not live in fear within their own country.
The party reiterated that justice in the case must be exemplary to serve as a deterrent against future acts of racial violence.
