Opposition continues attack on govt

Kohima | March 25 : The Opposition Congress continued its scathing attack on the government on the second day of the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s Address today. Former Chief Minister and Congress MLA, K.L Chishi said the Governor’s speech was nothing but mere historical facts containing lots of errors and ambiguities and that it lacked two cardinal outlines. He asserted that the Governor’s speech should highlight government performance during the Governor’s last address and the present address and that it also should highlight policy bottomlines for the ensuing year. He insisted that the speech did not reflect any achievement or highlight any policy of the government. It has only reflected immaturity in governance, he maintained. He also asserted that there was no mention of the issues to be tackled in seeking solutions for the people.
On the state’s preparedness for natural disasters, Chishi expressed concern over the condition of the official bungalows of the ministers pointing out that they are very vulnerable to fire due to its ancient mode of electrification. Expressing regrets and sadness over the burning of the Chief Minister’s official bungalow earlier last month, he pressed on the urgent need for rewiring of the official bungalows. “Let us wake up from our slumber and prepare ourselves to face natural disasters”. He further expressed concern over the rapid urbanization as a result of increasing migration, pointing out that the rural areas in some districts are now becoming vacant and that all districts are facing the problem of urbanization.
Earlier, also participating in the discussion, MLA Kongam expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of teachers and staff in schools in rural areas, particularly in the backward areas whereas the government has been talking of providing free textbooks, uniforms, free mid-day meals. The government should firstly provide teachers and staff and then only provide the facilities, he reasoned. Further, he lamented that a lot of villages in the backward areas are still without schools and ridiculed the government’s talk of hundred percent literacy. He also claimed that random transfers and postings are taking place and that the LP schools in these areas are without teachers as a result of the government engaging the teachers in implementation of SSA programmes. Also, he made a suggestion that the government set up mental hospitals in all the districts. On the agri sector too, he suggested that the government look for potential areas for production rather than concentrating only on Kohima and Dimapur.
