As a daily commuter in Kohima, it is sad to learn that private vehicles running on hire/fare have come under the scanner of All Nagaland Taxi Association, ANTA. There are certain time and places in Kohima where taxis prove that they are purely for business and have no relevance to any other thing like service to the public.
These days during office hours, it has become a common sight to see large number of people waiting for vehicle at mini bus stands especially Razhu Point and PR Hill bus stands. People can only wait for mini bus because taxis are not willing to go from Razhu Point to PR Hill or vice versa. The problem is more acute if a commuter has to be benevolent towards women and children. During such time, few private vehicles heading towards PR Hill or down towards town and each picking up few passengers is a great service in many ways.
Firstly, the passengers get the benefit of reaching his destination on time and with little effort.
Secondly, private vehicles being the majority plying and causing traffic jams, if each of these private vehicles pulls with passengers filled up to capacity, then the number of vehicles on the road will be greatly reduced.
Thirdly, it can also reduce the number of taxis plying. Taxis prefer hire and not fare by head count thereby compounding too many vehicles faring too little passenger.
Fourthly, fewer vehicles would mean less pollution.
Taxis think they should never get stuck in traffic jam between PR Hill and Razhu Point but are unmindful of blocking the entire traffic head from PR Hill, MLA Hostel Juction, Taxi Stand, near United Traders, Supermarket, Razhu point, Pezielietsie and High School Junction. Where are they not but choose to go on hire only – too many waiting for too little!
But in the evening, taxis literally do not exist at these places – AG to PR Hill, Lerie to PR Hill, New Reserve to PR Hill, Kezieke and Pezielietsie (Tin Pati) to Don Bosco area or P Khel, Agri colony to PR Hill and Kitsubozou to P. Khel or BSF Camp. So what is the grudge if few private vehicles are willing provide services at this places?
