Maligaon, March 29 (MExN): The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has intensified vigilance, carrying out a series of successful operations on March 24 across stations and trains under its jurisdiction, including Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Aluabari, Kamakhya, Hojai, Agartala, Samsi and New Bongaigaon.
In a humanitarian effort, RPF personnel at Guwahati rescued a minor boy from Train No. 15933 DN and handed him over to the Child Welfare Committee through Railway Child Line for care and protection.
In another operation, a Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) team from Katihar apprehended a tout at Samsi Railway Station with 14 illegal e-tickets worth over Rs 61,700, dealing a blow to illegal ticketing.
RPF teams also recovered contraband, including ganja and liquor, and apprehended offenders in cases involving illegal arms possession and drugging.
During March up to March 26, RPF of NFR recovered 268.82 kg of ganja, along with cigarettes, cough syrup, heroin, 1,200 kg of poppy seeds and liquor, with a combined seizure value exceeding Rs 1.91 crore. A total of 37 persons were apprehended, and Rs 7.6 lakh in cash was recovered in one case.
In Arms and Ammunition cases, one pistol, two magazines and two live cartridges were seized. In theft-related cases, eight offenders were arrested, leading to recovery of seven mobile phones and one trolley bag worth Rs 86,000.
Action against illegal ticketing led to the arrest of two touts with 16 tickets worth Rs 63,668, taking the overall recovery to over Rs 1.93 crore.
The RPF said the operations underscore its commitment to ensuring passenger safety, curbing unlawful activities and maintaining a secure railway environment, adding that vigilance will be further strengthened across railway premises.
