Kiphire, April 9 (MExN): In Kiphire district of Nagaland, where livelihood options are often limited, the members of Shengzii Self Help Group (SHG) had long struggled with unemployment and uncertainty. Their breakthrough came when Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kiphire stepped in with the low-cost mushroom cultivation. The group was guided by the technical expertise and support of KVK Kiphire.

KVK Kiphire trained the members on low-cost unit construction, using local materials and practical designs suitable for the area’s climate. The demonstration covered everything from structure layout to basic hygiene practices essential for successful cultivation, stated a press release received here. KVK further conducted hands-on training sessions on the complete mushroom production process-substrate preparation, sterilization, spawning, bagging and harvesting. Recognising the group's financial constraints, KVK also provided critical inputs including mushroom spawn, polythene bags, and detailed technical guidance, it stated.

In just a month, the SHG harvested their first batch of oyster mushrooms, yielding 70 kilograms. The mushrooms were sold in the local market, fetching a total income of Rs 17,500.
Encouraged by the results, Shengzii SHG is now expanding their mushroom cultivation unit. “With continued guidance from KVK Kiphire, they are increasing the size of their production area to accommodate more mushroom beds, with the goal of achieving higher yields and consistent income,” the press release from KVK Kiphire added.

It stated that the group is planning to produce mushrooms in larger quantities and supply them not only to local markets but also to neighbouring areas where demand is growing. The members are also exploring options for value addition, such as drying mushrooms for off-season sales and are discussing branding ideas to further boost their market presence.
A member of Shengzii SHG said, “We were struggling to make ends meet and had no idea about such an important self-employment opportunity that could bring such great results. Within just a month of training, we earned Rs 17,500 and proved to ourselves that we can stand on our own feet.” The member added, “Now, we are not only planning to expand our business, but we also feel confident, independent, and hopeful about the future.”
