Dimapur, November 6 (MExN): The St. Joseph University (SJU) 1st School Tournament Hub commenced on Thursday at the school’s campus ground at Ikishe village, Chümoukedima.

In a press release received here, it stated that the two-day tournament was organised in collaboration with DMI St. Joseph Global School with an aim to foster the spirit of unity, sportsmanship and healthy competition among young athletes.

It stated that Watinungsang, in his address as the special guest, acknowledged the importance of school tournaments in identifying and nurturing young talent and that he further encouraged the students to actively participate and discover their potential through such platforms.

Prof. Charles Mhonthung Ezung, dean of student affairs SJU, in his address, explained that the school tournament hub was initiated to share the university’s sports facilities with schools across the region and to promote sports development in Nagaland. 

Linking the event to the New Education Policy (NEP), Ezung noted that integrating sports with education was vital for holistic growth.

It stated that he further highlighted the achievements of the special guest, Watinungsang who was the first from the region to be selected as an ICC International Cricket Coach, and a former fast bowler associated with the Delhi Cricket Association and Nagaland Cricket Association.

The program also featured special performances including a Wooden Dumbbell Display and Pyramid Formation by students of DMI St. Joseph Global School. 

A relay for the ‘Lighting of the Torch’ was carried out by students who have represented the school at state and national levels. 

The oath-taking ceremony was led by Akhriezo, an undergraduate student from the Department of Physical Education, symbolizing the spirit of unity and fair play.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. LorenbeniKikon, assistant professor, Department of Biotechnology, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants, guests, and organizers for their contributions to making the event a grand success.
