SJU observes Earth Week with awareness drives

Chumoukedima, May 1 (MExN): The Eco Club, NCC and NSS units of St Joseph University (SJU) observed Earth Week from April 22 to 29 with a series of initiatives aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

According to an official update, the week-long programme commenced on April 22 with the circulation of daily e-pamphlets focusing on key environmental themes and encouraging eco-friendly actions among students and staff.

The observance culminated on April 29 with a pledge-taking ceremony held at the university ground. The pledge was administered by registrar Dr A Robert Xavier and was taken by faculty members, staff, members of the Eco Club, NCC, NSS and the Students’ Council, reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

The programme was chaired by Eco Club coordinator Dr Magdalene Kiewhuo. Deputy registrar Rev Sr Dr Thianes Mary, speaking on the occasion, highlighted the importance of Earth Week and emphasised the responsibility of individuals in safeguarding the environment for future generations. She also stressed the need for collective action to address environmental challenges.

The ceremony was followed by a tree plantation drive within the campus. Saplings were planted by the registrar, deputy registrar, finance controller, public relations officer, Students’ Council president, founding faculty members and representatives of the organising units.

The planted saplings will be jointly nurtured and maintained by the Eco Club, NCC and NSS units.

The university said the successful observance of Earth Week reflects its continued commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
