Sümi Patriots’ Day was observed with solemnity and reverence at the Patriots’ Monolith Point, Alahuto Colony Junction, Zunheboto on August 4. The event was organised by the All Sumi Students' Union (SKK) to honour the legacy and sacrifices made by Sümi patriots.

Delivering the keynote address, SKK President, Gihuka Zhimomi underscored the significance of the day. “We observe this day to honour the sacrifices made by the Sümi people for the nation’s cause,” he stated.

“The death anniversary of General Kaito Sukhai is not just a memorial, but a patriotic reminder. We must remember such sacrifices. Students and young people need to learn our history not just what is taught in classrooms, but the story of our society and its struggles. This day must be carried forward with pride.”

Floral tributes were offered by various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), symbolizing a shared spirit of remembrance and unity.
In his address, Dr Vihuto Asumi, President Sumi Hoho, reflected on the evolution of the day. “Initially observed by the SKK as ‘Sümi Youth Day’, it was later adopted by Sumi Hoho and renamed ‘Sümi Patriots’ Day’ in 1997. It is one of the most significant days for the Sümi community,” he said. “There is no greater sacrifice than to lay down one’s life for the nation.”

He recalled the heroic life of General Kaito Sukhai, who became the youngest general at the age of 22. Born in 1933, he was referred to as the “Youngest General” by the BBC during an interview in London in 1962. He was shot on August 3, 1968, and succumbed to his injuries the following day in Kohima.

“We gather today with solemn hearts and steadfast spirits to commemorate Sümi Patriots’ Day a day deeply engraved in the history of our people,” Dr Asumi continued. “This day is not only about remembering one man, but about honouring the courage, conviction, and sacrifice of all our Sümi patriots. Their stories of bravery must be preserved not just in monuments but in the living conscience of our society.”

“General Kaito embodied the spirit of leadership and courage. His sacrifice reminds us that the quest for justice demands unwavering commitment. Let this day not be a mere ritual, but a solemn reminder that freedom, unity, and justice are not gifts they are responsibilities. We must remain united and not be fragmented by narrow interests or divisive politics. The same blood that ran through our martyrs runs through us. Their legacy must inspire us to lead with integrity and humility.”

“Patriotism does not only live on the battlefield; it exists in our classrooms, churches, farms, and institutions. When we educate a child, protect our land, speak truth with grace, and uplift the poor we too are patriots.”

Dr Asumi concluded by calling upon the youth to “learn your history, carry it with pride, and live it with responsibility,” and upon leaders “to be united in our efforts not only in memory of our fallen heroes, but for the generations who deserve a future of peace, dignity, and justice.”

Hetoho S Zhimomi, President Sumi Kukami Hoho, emphasized the need to preserve the Sümi language, “Sütsa”. He urged educational institutions to incorporate “Sütsa” into their curriculum and called on Naga Political Groups to act as true representatives of the people. He also encouraged the public to use the Right to Information (RTI) Act responsibly and not for personal gain.

Vice President of the Sumi Totimi Hoho (STH), Husheli Zhimo, encouraged students not to regret missing classes for the event. “This is also a vital part of your education. Learning about your roots and history is equally important,” she said.

Earlier in the programme, SKK General Secretary Toshika K. Kiba chaired the event, and Livika S. Yeptho led the invocation. A special song was presented by Kheks Naga, and the event concluded with a benediction pronounced by Vihepu Zhimo, Assistant Pastor.

Meanwhile, Dr K Akaho Sema, President Sumi Officers’ Union Zunheboto Unit has informed that the union will take initiative of renovating the Sumi Patriotic Monolith located at Alahuto Colony Junction, Zunheboto.
