SAYO in collaboration with SATGC rescued a 70-year-old woman trekker from West Bengal on December 11.
Kohima, December 12 (MExN): The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO), in collaboration with the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council (SATGC), rescued a 70-year-old woman trekker from West Bengal on December 11 after she suffered a fall and reportedly dislocated her hip while trekking to Dzükou Valley.
According to officials, the incident occurred when the tourist slipped along the trail during the ascent. Rescuers improvised a stretcher using a bed-sheet to transport her and, due to the difficult terrain, had to carry her on the back at certain stretches. A physiotherapist assessed her condition before she was taken back to the homestay. The rescue operation continued late into the night because of the challenging terrain and the tourist’s condition.
SAYO stated that the guides involved in the rescue had earlier undergone disaster management basic knowledge and first-aid training under the Tourism Department, which played a crucial role in managing the situation.
The organisation expressed gratitude to the Community Health Centre (CHC) Viswema for providing an ambulance to support the rescue operation.
Further, SAYO said that to ensure the safety of trekkers and prevent unwarranted incidents, it is mandatory for visitors to take SAYO-registered tour guides. It noted that during the recent Hornbill Festival, many tourists attempted to trek without guides, creating unwanted situations at the entry counter, with some even taking videos and photos of officials present.
SAYO stated that such actions compromise both safety and protocol and reinforced the need for proper guidance while accessing the valley.
