Soyem Sangya edged past Auyang FC 3-2 in a thrilling Eliminator of the Tuensang District Football Association (TDFA) League play-offs on Saturday, setting up a clash with Naga Brothers in Qualifier 2 on September 20.
The contest at Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground was an end-to-end battle, with Soyem Sangya securing the winner midway through the second half.
Soyem Sangya took the lead in the 20th minute when a fumble from Auyang’s goalkeeper allowed Lentok Khumba to score from close range. Changlemba doubled the advantage in the 38th minute, finishing off a cross from Lentok.
Auyang reduced the deficit just before halftime through captain Likoakum, who curled in a free kick in the 42nd minute. The skipper struck again immediately after the restart, levelling the match in the 46th minute.
The decisive moment came in the 60th minute when Kelep dribbled past two defenders and scored to restore Soyem’s lead. Auyang pressed hard for an equaliser but Soyem’s defence, marshalled by Yemlong Chaba L, stood firm. Yemlong was later adjudged Man of the Match for his performance.
Earlier, an exhibition match between Chang Students’ Union Tuensang Town (CSUTT) and Sangtam Students’ Union Tuensang Town (SSUTT) ended 2-1 in favour of CSUTT. Chuingashan Chamroy, Chief Manager of State Bank of India, Tuensang branch, attended the day’s matches as patron.
With two fixtures left in the TDFA League season, Soyem Sangya will meet Naga Brothers on September 20 for a place in the final, where Tuensang Village Sports Foundation await the winner. The championship is scheduled for September 27.
