Several students of Nagaland University (NU) remained seated during the playing of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ at the university’s 8th Convocation in Lumami campus, Zunheboto district, on Friday, in line with the Naga Students’ Federation’s (NSF) boycott call.

The Nagaland University Students’ Union- Lumami NUSU (L) on March 5 had announced the decision following directives from the NSF. In a notice, the union stated that the protest was necessary as the playing of the song contradicts the special provisions guaranteed to the state.

“The Union has unanimously decided to boycott the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ by remaining seated while it is being played, as it contradicts the special provisions under Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution, which safeguards the religious beliefs and customary practices of the people of Nagaland,” the NUSU (L) notice stated.

The convocation ceremony proceeded as scheduled, with the some section of the students remaining in their seats in a silent demonstration while the rest of the assembly stood for the rendition of the song.
