Supongmeren urges farmers to shift from subsistence to commercial agriculture

MEDZIPHEMA, MAY 29 (MExN): Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) S Supongmeren Jamir on Thursday launched the "Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan" campaign in Nagaland as the chief guest at a programme held at ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema.

The launch marked the beginning of the 15-day nationwide Pre-Kharif campaign in the state and was jointly organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Dimapur, ICAR Nagaland Centre, and ICAR-NRC on Mithun.

The event witnessed the participation of several dignitaries including Dr Girish Patil S, Director, ICAR-NRC on Mithun; Dr H Kalita, Head, ICAR Nagaland Centre; Prof L Daiho, Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences, Medziphema; ADC Medziphema James Swu; Dr Phool Kumari, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Dimapur; representatives from the Central Institute of Horticulture; officials from agri and allied departments; and hundreds of progressive farmers from Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland districts.

Addressing the gathering, Jamir underscored the vital role of agriculture in Naga society and urged farmers to transition from subsistence farming to commercial, sustainable agri-based enterprises. He encouraged farmers to fully utilise the resources and support systems available through institutions such as KVKs, ICAR centres, and others.

Highlighting the need to go beyond extension services, the MP stressed the importance of improving the agricultural marketing ecosystem. This, he said, includes strengthening cold chain infrastructure, affordable transport and logistics, post-harvest management facilities, and facilitating Geographical Indication (GI) tags and certifications, alongside ensuring robust market and credit linkages.

Jamir also expressed deep respect for the farming community and assured his full support for initiatives that promote agricultural development in the state.
