Chiephobozou, October 29 (MExN): A block-level training and sensitisation programme on the Registration of Births and Deaths Act and the online Civil Registration System (CRS) for registrars and Anganwadi workers of Chiephobozou and Botsa blocks was conducted at Chiephobozou on October 29.
Addressing the programme, EAC Chiephobozou Viketoulie Metha, NCS, highlighted the importance of birth and death certificates and urged registrars to ensure that there were no delays in registering births and deaths.
According to a DIPR update, Deputy Director, Department of Economics and Statistics, David Khutso, spoke on the Registration of Births and Deaths Act and the online Civil Registration System.
Economics and Statistics Officer (ESO) Visi Yokha stressed that birth registration serves as legal proof of a person's date and place of birth, while death registration records are essential for settling inheritance matters, insurance claims and other legal requirements.
Yokha also explained the procedures for registering births in different circumstances, including children taken up for adoption and those born through surrogacy or assisted reproductive technology (ART), including in vitro fertilisation (IVF). She also briefed the trainees on the roles and responsibilities of registrars and sub-registrars.
The programme also covered the correction and cancellation of entries in birth and death records. The trainees were informed that changes to such records were generally not permitted, except under specific provisions of the Act.
The provisions for correction or cancellation were categorised into three broad types: clerical or formal errors, errors in substance, and fraudulent or improper entries.
The trainees were also sensitised to the importance of cooperation from Village Council Chairpersons (VCCs) in implementing the digitisation of birth and death certificates.
The programme was chaired by Theyieneinuo Belho, District Economics and Statistics Officer and District Registrar of Births, Kohima. It was organised by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics in collaboration with the administration of Chiephobozou Sub-Division.
