Training on management of newly established fruit orchards conducted in Nagaland

Dimapur, February 25 (MExN): Around 60 beneficiaries from Beisumpuikam village, Peren district and Medziphema village under Chümoukedima were trained on management of newly established fruit orchards under ICAR’s NEH programme on February 12 and 14.

This was conducted by ICAR- All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Fruits, Medziphema Centre, Department of Horticulture, Nagaland University (NU), stated a press release. The programme was aimed to upgrade technical knowledge about the important steps to follow the calendar of operations for adopting various intercultural operations and plant protection measures at appropriate timeline, thereby to improve the quality and productivity of the fruits. Further it seeks to improve farmer’s skills and knowledge in areas such as planting technique, plant protection measures, intercultural operations etc.Resource person, Dr Animesh Sarkar, Assistant Professor, Department of Horticulture, SAS: NU shared the tips on the soil and plant management of the newly established litchi plantations. He also emphasised on the role of canopy management and techniques that can be adopted for tree shape maintenance in the initial 1-3 years of plant growth with supporting videos and demonstrations, the press release mentioned. The various intercultural operations like mulching, girdling, bagging and plant protection measures for old trees and orchards were also discussed. This was followed by interactive session between the farmers and AICRP (F) technical staffs. The Project-In-Charge, Prof CS Maiti invited progressive farmers who are enthusiastic beneficiaries can volunteer land to establish demonstration mother plant block to incorporate advanced technologies from planting to harvesting of fruit crops.
