Dimapur, March 25 (MExN): Owners, driver and motor workers of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur have again raised the issue of the never-ending extortion and illegal collections in the highways of the three states. The Coordination Committee of Owners, Drivers and Motor Workers’ Union of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur met in Bokajan February 25, 2011.
In the meeting, the members expressed strong concern over the illegal collections and extortion transport operators are facing on the national highways 39, 53 and 37 passing through Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. The committee said it would undertake combined efforts to appraise state government and find a solution to solve this disease of extortion.
Another issue the organization discussed was the security cover provided by the Assam, Nagaland and Manipur governments to transporters. The organization has decided to ‘apprise’ the state governments to ‘accelerate’ the existing ‘escort system’ to avoid undue delay in transporting essentials such as petroleum products, medicines and food.
