Commemorating the 198th birth anniversary of the founder of the Red Cross, Henry Dunan, a walkathon under the banner, “Walk for Humanity” will be organised by the Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland (IRCSN) State Branch on the occasion of World Red Cross Day on May 8.

This was informed during a press conference held at Hotel Ura Kohima on May 2 during which Akhale V Khamo, General Secretary, IRCSN highlighted that the event aims to promote humanitarian values, health awareness, and active community participation among youth.

While the observance of World Red Cross Day has been confined in their hall during the previous years, she said, “we wanted to do something different this year by organising this Walk for Humanity” while also expressing the need for more visibility at a time when we are living in a very uncertain situation and require everybody's participation.

“We cannot do humanitarian work alone,” she said while urging the participation of everyone as volunteers towards the cause.

The walkathon on May 8 will be flagged off from the Red Cross Complex at 7:00 am and conclude at 9:30 AM at the Old NST Bus Station. During the event, it was also informed that Kohima town MLA, Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhütso will deliver a motivational talk not as a politician but as a physician after the walkathon.

The Convenor of the upcoming event, Khyochano TCK said that this ‘special walkathon’ has been put together as “a bold public call to our conscience at a time where the need of the hour is for people to rise together in unity.”

Stating that this Walk represents the need for the visibility of compassion, she exuded hope that as citizens gather together, they would once again be reminded of “the power of humanity, of humanitarian service, of collective community work and of resilience and compassion.”

This is not just an event or a feel good time, she said, but added that it has been “carefully put together to build a movement among all generations so that we can come together as a people united to look around, and look out for each other in the days to come.”

Abou Mere, Managing Committee Member further highlighted the participation of NGOs including the health sector, family planning, Kripa Foundation, etc. He also impressed upon that some senior citizens have vouched and challenged the citizens of Kohima to participate in the event.

'United for Humanity' has been chosen as the theme for the event and with age no bar, the Walkathon is expected to have the participation of over 500 people including students from educational institutions, Kohima Village Youth, Senior Citizens, Blood Donor Association, etc.

Others present during the press conference were Dr R Rose, Vice Chairman, IRCS Nagaland, Santu Thapa, Joint Secretary, IRCS Kohima, Beizo, Honorary Secretary, IRCS Kohima and Dr. James Solo, Managing Committee Member.
