DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 14 (MExN): Watinungsang Imsong, an ICC-certified coach from Nagaland, has been appointed as the assistant coach for the South Africa Legends team in the International Masters League, marking a historic first for Northeast India.

The tournament, scheduled from February 22 to March 16, will be held in Navi Mumbai, Vadodara, and Raipur. It will feature some of the game’s most iconic retired players, including Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Jonty Rhodes, Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis.

Watinungsang, who is also the joint secretary of the Dimapur District Cricket Association (DDCA), is set to leave for India on Feb. 20. The DDCA hailed his selection as a significant milestone for cricket in Nagaland and the region.

“This remarkable achievement marks a proud moment for Nagaland cricket, as Imsong will be in the midst of some of the greatest legends of the game, including Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, and Kumar Sangakkara, to name a few,” the DDCA said in a statement. “His appointment to such a high-profile tournament is a testament to his dedication, expertise, and passion for the sport.”

The association said his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring coaches and players in the region, showing that talent and hard work can lead to international recognition.

The DDCA extended its best wishes for his tenure with the South Africa Legends, expressing confidence that he will make a meaningful contribution to the team’s success in the tournament.
