Minister for Tourism and Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along on Wednesday remarked that, “the greatest enterprise that Nagaland has ever done is creating unnecessary NGOs and Civil Societies” while urging, “we need responsible NGOs and Civil Societies.”
Addressing the All Nagaland College Students Union (ANCSU) Degree Toppers Felicitation Program at SIRD Hall, Kohima on August 5, he underscored that the state should establish an enterprise for a progressive community, and a prosperous people. In this regard, he also cited that one community should not deprive the other community to become prosperous whether it is in politics, development or association.
“Nagaland should give out the best human resource,” he stated while urging parents, citizens and teachers to work together towards the progress and prosperity of the state.
Underling that we have to take collective responsibility, he said, “why can't we work together as the 17 Naga tribes and also non-Nagas who are citizens of Nagaland to make Nagaland progress?”
Asserting that we cannot make the agenda of an entity to be better than the other, he underscored that, “we have to make the agenda of the whole state as a progressive and a prosperous entity.”
“If you want to make an impact and talk about the development of Nagaland as a whole, then we need to make long term goals,” he further added.
After 60 years of Statehood, he also maintained that, “we are the most divided society among the communities of states in India” while pointing out that, “we take achievements as personal, we take progress and prosperity as individuals, and that is going to make us suffer in pain not very far from today.”
However, in the meantime he commended ANCSU for taking a step forward to felicitate and appreciate the toppers of Nagaland, not just Naga Students but non-Naga citizens of Nagaland, while stating that, “all of us together make Nagaland.”
He also exuded hope that this goes beyond the felicitation. He said that the idea of inclusiveness while preserving one's indigenousness is very important for the idea of Nagaland state to develop and progress. Stating that when we think exclusively, the whole idea of a progressive and inclusive state diminishes, he congratulated the toppers and stated hope that the young achievers would go on to become great facilitators for the country as a whole. He further lauded ANCSU for having the resilience to continue working for the students of Nagaland.
In his Presidential Speech, Kivika Yeptho, President, ANCSU said that the achievement of the toppes is a reflection of their hardwork, perseverance and dedication while stating hope that it would further inspire the students' community to realise that excellence is achievable. “Let the knowledge uplift others and your success inspire the next generation,” he added while affirming that ANCSU would continue to be a partner to educational transformation, sincerity, and commitment.
During the event, a total of 47 toppers including 20 from Nagaland University, 7 from Polytechnic institutions and 20 from Autonomous Colleges.
Highlights of the Programme included invocation by Dr Chikhungo Puro, Pastor Chakhesang Baptist Church, Kohima, Degree Toppers Felicitation by H Tunato Achumi, Education Secretary, ANCSU, speech on behalf of toppers by Eunice Aier, Dimapur Government College, Special Number by Keduosenuo Kire, Oriental College, Kohima and vote of thanks by Sotilo Tep, General Secretary, ANCSU while the programme was chaired by Imnawabang Longkumer, Asst General Secretary, ANCSU.
