Wokha CMO warns against tobacco industry’s misleading ads

Wokha, May 31 (MExN): District Tobacco Control Cell, Wokha under the aegis of Department of Health and Family Welfare organised a programme to observe World No Tobacco Day at Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha on May 31. 

Keynote speaker, Dr Thunchangbemo Ezung, Chief Medical Officer, Wokha said the public should be well aware of the misleading advertisements shown by tobacco industry.

Public should refrain from buying such tobacco products, he added. He highlighted on the ill effects of tobacco consumption leading to diseases such as cancer.

The theme speaker, Dr Niya Kath, MD, Dermatologist, District Hospital Wokha while speaking on the theme ‘Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products’ said the tobacco industry is glamorizing tobacco usage with deceptive advertisements and the younger generation are falling into these traps set on various social media platforms. 

She informed that India has the highest rate of oral cancer due to tobacco consumption and the Government of India has come up with various health initiatives such as tobacco cessation and toll free helplines under National Tobacco Control Programme. 

Shanchobeni P Lotha, Panel Lawyer Wokha District Legal Service Association spoke on Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003. She said the Act covers several aspects such as prohibition of advertisements, selling of tobacco products to person below 18 years as a punishable offence, prohibition of smoking in public places, ban of tobacco products with 100 yard radius of educational institutions etc. She also encouraged the students to be advocate of Anti-Tobacco campaign.

A musical skit on Anti-Tobacco was presented by the students of Anti-Tobacco Club, GHSS. Dr Thungchanbemo Ezung, CMO Wokha felicitated GHSS, Wokha, Government Primary School Selukvu, Brighter High School Wokha and Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Doyang Hydro Project with Tobacco Free Educational Institution certificates during the programme.
