A day-long training programme on sustainable farming techniques in piggery and poultry was held at the Niropen community hall, Wokha, with a focused objective of empowering local women farmers from Niropen Colony and Longsa village on June 25.

The programme was organised under the aegis of Wokha District Administration, Department of Social Welfare, and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, in collaboration with Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission and Tepzen Agro Food & Farm Tech, Tseminyu.

The resource person, Dr Gwazenlo Tep, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Wokha and Consultant at Tepzen Agro Food & Farm Tech, provided insights into sustainable piggery and poultry practices suitable for the region.

Emphasising Nagaland’s immense potential in the livestock sector, Dr Tep noted that the State continues to be one of the largest importers of pork in India. He advocated for increased local production through the integration of scientific farming techniques with indigenous practices.

Dr Tep highlighted the importance of breed selection aligned with specific farm goals, and elaborated on the economics of pig and poultry farming by presenting well-documented data, along with detailed profit and expenditure models from Tepzen’s own farms.

Stressing animal health management, he urged participants to adopt routine vaccination schedules for pigs, poultry and local chickens, and emphasised the necessity of strict biosecurity measures, particularly in view of the ongoing threat posed by African Swine Fever (ASF).

The training was attended by over 120 women farmers from the local community and surrounding areas. All participants were provided with free Tepzen chicken feed and chicks.
The programme was chaired by Chichanthung L Ezung, Gender Specialist, DHEW, while welcome address was delivered by the Vice Chairman of Niropen Colony, Nyanthung Lotha.
