Urges state governments of Manipur and Nagaland to settle issue at earliest
Imphal, March 24 (MExN): The Central Executive Committee of World Meetei Council (WMC) has expressed dismay over the extension of bandh along the National Highway 2 (NH2) and appealed the Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO) to end the blockade.
The WMC understands the sentiment of SAPO but it must also know that it “cannot take the people of the region into ransom while they demand something from the government,” the Council stated in a press release.
The NH2 is a very important lifeline of Manipur and the last three days of bandh had already put the people into much trouble and its indefinite extension is “extremely unjustified,” it said.
Blocking a NH, a National property as a means to protest at the cost of innocent people who have nothing to do with the issue is a serious violation of human rights, the WMC asserted, adding that it is the common people who suffer the most from such bandhs.
As fraternal people, the WMC in the larger interests of all the native people in the region earnestly appeal SAPO to end this road blockade, stated the press release from WMC Secretary General, Yambem Arun Meetei.
It further urged the State governments of Manipur and Nagaland to settle the issue at the earliest before it creates more problems.
The SAPO on Wednesday 23 extended a 72-hour total bandh within Southern Angami jurisdiction to an indefinite bandh with effect from midnight of March 23 citing Manipur government’s failure to withdraw its armed personnel and permanent structures within 72 hours from Kezoltsa area.
