Youth-led angling competition held at Ekok-Ju village in Wokha

Wokha, August 8 (MExN): A group of like-minded educated unemployed youth organised an angling competition at Ekok-Ju village in Wokha district on Saturday to promote recreational fishing, encourage community participation and create a platform for people of all ages to explore alternative avenues of livelihood and entrepreneurship.

The “Exciting Day of Fishing” was held at Z Lotha Fisheries, Ekok-Ju village, providing fishing enthusiasts and families an opportunity to spend time together in a healthy and enjoyable outdoor activity.

Pipen Erui won the first prize of Rs 50,000, while Shanpemo Kithan secured the second position and received Rs 25,000. Aben Murry was declared the third winner and received Rs 10,000.

The event followed a “one person, one rod” rule. Special prizes of Rs 3,000 each were awarded for the Biggest Catch and First Catch, besides 10 consolation prizes of Rs 2,500 each.

The second prize of Rs 25,000 was sponsored by NSCN (R) president Akato Chophy as an initiative to encourage and support the efforts of the youth. The organisers also received support from several other individuals who sponsored the consolation prizes, contributing to the successful conduct of the event.

Besides its competitive aspect, the initiative reflected the growing popularity of angling as a recreational activity in Nagaland. With the state blessed with abundant water resources and diverse aquatic life, angling is increasingly attracting young people and outdoor enthusiasts.

The organisers said the event was intended not only to provide entertainment but also to demonstrate how young people could come together and create opportunities through their own initiative and enterprise.

Such community-supported activities, they said, could encourage youth to explore self-employment and develop sustainable recreational ventures.
