12 yrs in making: Nagaland State Emporium Complex opens

Nagaland Chief Minister, Dr Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the much awaited newly multi-storeyed building Nagaland State Emporium Complex under Nagaland Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd (NHHDCL) at Kohima on June 6.

The new emporium at Kohima saw the light of the day after 12 years since it was initiated in the year 2013. With this new emporium, the NHHDCL currently runs seven Emporiums -.one each in the metro cities of Delhi and Kolkata and five in the State viz. Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung, Tuensang and Phek.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated a much-awaited empowerment centre in Nagaland today, marking a significant milestone for the state’s cultural and economic development. Describing the initiative as small in scale but vital in purpose, Rio highlighted its symbolic and practical importance for Nagaland’s tribal identity and economic future.

Addressing the gathering, Rio commended all those involved who have made this project possible stating that the emporiums are the image and pride of the state.

Highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the state and traditional artistry of each tribe, he noted the intricate designs, colours and motifs displayed at the Rooted Gardens stating it ‘as a reflection of the state’s cultural richness and traditional artistry where every piece express the spirit of our ancestors.’

Rio underscored the need for systematised production in handloom and handicrafts, creation of quality-controlled design samples, and also rope in experts, designers and tribal bodies to meet commercial standards and to streamline mass production as well.

However, he emphasised that original designs should not be altered, and also suggested on establishment of a yarn bank and engaging experts and also explore textile printing as per the demands in the market.

Dr. Rio expressed his satisfaction on the new facility, and urged upon all to make use of the utility to enhance Nagaland’s cultural pride and self-sufficiency.

NHHDCL Chairman, Prasielie Pienyü said “these Emporiums are not just a marketplace; it is a celebration of our identity, our values, and our traditions” which serves as a vital platform for artisans, providing them with the recognition and opportunities they deserve.

“Through these Emporiums, we are not only promoting unique and beautiful artisanal products of our State but also fostering sustainable livelihoods, supporting local economies, and ensuring the future generations to enjoy and continue these age-old crafts” he stated.

He informed that the new complex has seven floors with the State Emporium on the first floor, three floors of shopping area, a restaurant, a library and a well-furnished conference hall with two guest rooms. 

The Project was established at a total project cost of Rs 11.25 cr with M/S Avituo and Company as the contractor, supervised by the Engineering wing of the Industries and Commerce Department.
