SAYO urges strict safety rules for trekkers

A 19-year-old tourist from Guwahati, who fell approximately 100 feet from the trekking trail below Khiyokesa, Viswema Village, along the Dzükou Valley route on July 17, was rescued in a swift and coordinated operation.
The injured trekker, identified as Hisahetuk Das, was pulled to safety despite heavy rain, steep cliffs and dense dwarf bamboo vegetation, according to Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) President Zasitsolie Beio.
Beio commended the trained tour guides and volunteers from the Viswema Youth Organisation and Z Khel Viswema Youth Organisation for their courage and selfless service in carrying the injured trekker to safety.

He also acknowledged the prompt leadership of SAYO Vice President and Chairman of the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council, Virato Naleo, whose timely intervention helped coordinate the rescue operation.
The Community Health Centre (CHC), Viswema, provided ambulance services, while the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima extended emergency medical care.
The successful rescue demonstrated the preparedness and efficiency of the local community in responding to emergencies under challenging weather and terrain, SAYO added.
In the wake of the incident, SAYO urged all visitors to strictly adhere to existing safety regulations while trekking to Dzükou Valley and other tourist destinations. It stressed that tourists should engage registered local tour guides, particularly during the monsoon season and when undertaking difficult routes, to ensure safety and facilitate prompt emergency response if required.
