Kohima, June 6 (MExN): Nagaland Road & Bridges Minister G Kaito Aye graced the tree plantation drive from Satakha to Zunheboto held during World Environment Day on June 5.
The kick off programme was held in NH-702A stretch in Shoixe village junction, organized by Sumi Youth Organization (SYO) in collaboration with District Forest Department Zunheboto by roping the diverse stakeholders, including churches from Zunheboto and Satakha, civil societies, various department, Zunheboto Town Councils, Satakha Town council and 111 Battalion BSF, Satakha, DEF Zunheboto and various clubs and organization.
More than 300 saplings were planted from Satakha to Zunheboto.
The Minister said, “It is not too late; we can still begin and contribute to a healthier environment.” He encouraged the Sumi Youth Organization to expand its efforts beyond Satakha and Zunheboto and to initiate even in Aghunato, Atoizu, Pughoboto, and Suruhuto etc, stating this expansion would significantly enhance the impact on environmental conservation, biodiversity, and community participation in civic services.
Emphasizing the importance of youth involvement in environmental sustainability and community development, the Minister assured his support for noble causes championed by the youth. He also urged the concerned village Councils and churches to come forward and assist the SYO in the post plantation maintenance and care of the plants within their village areas.
The Minister has distributed approximately 1,600 saplings to 16 villages and several individuals within the Satakha constituency.
Representative from Sumi Hoho also spoke on the occasion and appreciated SYO’s commendable initiative for the environment.
Obed Bohovi Swu, SFS DFO Zunheboto highlighted the significance of this year’s World Environment Day 2025 theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’ He outlined the program’s three main objectives: maintaining ecological balance, enhancing the aesthetic beauty of the Zunheboto district, and promoting ecotourism.
SYO President Hikavi H Kinimi said “The Sumi Youth Organization is overwhelmed to witness our people of all ages uniting for this noble cause. It is a phenomenal testament to our community spirit and dedication to environment stewardship.” We must be reminded that, we are not only planting trees but also sowing the seeds of unity, responsibility, love and tranquillity, he added.
