Fearful of the spread of COVID-19 which is the worst pandemic to hit countries worldwide in this century, the Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) has sought a complete lockdown of Meghalaya so as to safeguard the lives of the people.
“Our state lacks the medical infrastructure required to fight against the pandemic and we feel that ultimate precautionary measures need to be taken. After consulting various medical officers, we believe a complete lockdown of about a month is the only way out,” said ADE president, Dalseng B Ch Momin on Monday.
The pressure group added that the state of the medical infrastructure within the state is no secret while opining that COVID-19 cannot be dealt with if it enters the state.
“Further there are no treatments available at this time to fight the virus. Our only hope lies on the fact that it should be contained outside our borders and leaves us with no option but a complete lockdown,” he said.
The ADE mentioned the steps taken by various states in the country in an attempt to stop the virus from spiraling out of control and also pointed to many countries which have gone into complete lockdown and felt the example should be followed in Meghalaya.
It then appealed to the state government to take measures to ensure proper stock availability and distribution of medicines and other basic necessary commodities during the lockdown.
Momin warned that advanced countries had taken a lackadaisical approach to containing the virus and are still suffering despite some of the best medical infrastructure in the world.
