BAN flags ‘atmosphere of fear’ among businesses

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 29 (MExN): The Business Association of Nagas (BAN) today stated that “tactics of coercion, intimidation, extortion and kidnapping” facing the business community in Nagaland has “created an atmosphere of fear, driven away investors, crippled businesses, and stifled youth potential, while claiming to serve the people.”

In connection with the January 19 abduction case, the BAN appreciated the Home Minister of Nagaland and the entire law enforcement machinery for their “decisive, timely, and transparent action.” “The successful apprehension of key operatives responsible for the recent abduction and extortion campaign is not just a victory for law and order. It is a landmark moment for justice, security, and the restoration of public confidence, sending a clear message that lawlessness will not be tolerated,” it stated.

It further commended the Western Sumi Frontal Organisations for its ultimatum demanding accountability.

The BAN said that the Naga political struggle was born out of a quest for dignity “not to incubate a parasitic elite that feeds on the sweat of businesses.” “BAN stands ready to cooperate with every bona-fide stakeholder in securing a climate where commerce, culture and youth ambition can flourish free from the gun. It is time to recognize that extortion is not resistance, intimidation is not revolution, and kidnapping is not nationalism. Our forefathers fought for freedom, unity, and development, not for the privilege to exploit their own people,” it added.

It meanwhile said that the installation of surveillance CCTV has long been a key priority for the Business Association of Nagas (BAN) and various civil society organizations. “The decision to implement the system under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework was carefully developed and refined, with the government duly acknowledging and advancing its execution under the exemplary leadership of the Director General of Police (DGP), thereby heeding the voices of the people,” it added.

It called on all Hohos, civic bodies and civil society to join in speaking truthfully and firmly against those who harm our people and our economy. The BAN said that the Western Sumi Frontal Organisation’s ultimatum should be taken as a reminder that the people of Nagaland expect accountability and are prepared to call a spade a spade.

BAN also reiterated its stand to stay committed to reporting any grievances of BAN members to the rightful authority. “This incident should be taken as a reminder by all individual/organisation that it is illegal to take law in its own hand,” it added.
