
Dimapur, May 31 (MExN): A Catholic Church, which was under construction and nearing to completion at Phokhungri (Pki) village under Meluri subdivision was pulled down and burned on May 28 by the villagers of Phokhungri.
The Pochury Catholic Union in a press note issued by its president Rezusie and general secretary Chichutho Jose stated that one Yatetsü, a Catholic member was "physically manhandled" and his house was locked on the same day. He was made to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 in violation of the resolution 2004 that states: “. ……… Above all, his family members and Mr. Tingo’s family were expelled from the village.”
“On the basis of the above resolution the Pochury Catholic Union (PCU) had filed a case to the DC of Phek which was endorsed to ADC, Meluri which was taken up by him and issued a judgment on January 7 , 2011, Order No. Memo No. JUD- 6/MLI/2010-11/98, nullifying the resolution as unconstitutional. In accordance to the judgment, the community went back to their village and started the construction of their village Church, which was pulled down and burnt (sic),” the note stated.
It also stated that the PCU is pained by the unruly action of the Christian villagers of Pki who have no fear and respect for God and respect for their fellow citizens and their Constitutional Rights. Moreover, the PCU in its emergency meeting held on May 29 was compelled to launch FIR at Police Station, Meluri and condemned in its strongest term the “barbaric act” of the Phokhungri villagers. “We also request all right thinking citizens to condemn the same.”
