COVID-era doctors’ issue: NSF puts agitation on hold after govt forms HPC

Kohima | February 7

With the Nagaland Government constituting a High-Powered Committee (HPC) to examine the issue of regularisation of COVID-era doctors, the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has decided to keep all democratic measures in abeyance for the time being.

The decision was taken at the 2nd Emergency Presidential Council Meeting of the NSF (2025–2027), held on February 7, which deliberated on the way forward following the government’s decision to constitute the HPC.

Earlier, the Federation had served a 45-day ultimatum to the state government on December 20, 2025, which expired on February 3, 2026. On the same day, the State Cabinet decided to keep the regularisation orders in abeyance and to constitute the HPC.

According to an NSF press statement, the Council took serious note of the Cabinet decision dated February 3 to keep the regularisation orders of 97 Medical Officers under the Department of Health and Family Welfare in abeyance and to constitute an HPC to examine the matter.

In view of this development, the House endorsed the NSF Executive Council to engage with the HPC with the objective of arriving at an amicable, fair and just resolution.

During the meeting, the House also placed on record its appreciation for the services rendered by health workers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, acknowledging their contribution to public health and the welfare of the people.

While noting that the ultimatum has expired, the NSF stated that it has temporarily put the agitation on hold in the interest of dialogue.

However, it cautioned that all its units have been asked to remain vigilant and prepared for further action should the discussions fail to yield a satisfactory outcome.

The Federation reiterated its commitment to transparency, meritocracy and constitutional procedures, while affirming that it would continue to safeguard the interests of the student community and the public at large.
