Mokokchung, May 4 (MExN): Almost all the DAN Legislators led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and NPF president Dr Shurhozelie Lezietsu and Lok Sabha MP CM Chang campaigned for NPF candidate Toshipokba Longkumer at Town Hall Mokokchung today. The message from Nagaland Chief Minister was clear; this is an election between the ‘Government and Opposition’ and a time for Aonglenden constituency people to decide whether they want to be a part of the government or a part of the opposition.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his speech pointed out that this by-election is a right opportunity for the Aonglenden people to be a part of the DAN government and to work for the people.
Saying that this by-election is not a fight against Dr SC Jamir, Rio said that this election is a fight between political ideologies and though Dr Jamir as a Naga leader is well respected and acknowledged, yet this time round, since it is election, the NPF party has to fight and work for winning the election.
He also took a dig at the Union Minister of State for Planning Ashwani Kumar who appealed voters at a Congress election rally to elect Dr Jamir since he is going to be the future Chief Minister of Nagaland. Rio simply termed the words of Ashwani Kumar as words from an ignorant person who uttered the words without knowing the ground realities in the state. He said that the NPF has now 40 legislators in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and further affirmed that the NPF will form the government even in the next term.
Rio, talking about his parting with Congress way back in 2000, said that he did not approve of Dr Jamir’s policy, which he termed as ‘family politics’ and therefore he resigned from the Home Ministry portfolio which he held then. He also pointed out to the voters that even if they don’t support Dr Jamir this election, no one will feel bad because the people of Aonglenden have supported and loved him enough in the past and have done great things for him. Therefore, Rio asked the voters to leave aside the love for the old and to love oneself.
NPF President and Minister for Higher Technical Dr Shurhozelie Lezietsu, literally raked up the ‘Bedrock of the Naga society’ issue with the words ‘we don’t want to talk of the past, but we are compelled to talk of the past when people create confusion’.
He then countered the Congress party claim that the Bedrock of the Naga society was ‘officially buried’ and asked when, where and how it was buried.
Dr Shurhozelie Lezietsu pointed out the main contents of the booklet and said that the Congress party had asserted that ‘statehood compromised sovereignty’ and labeled the Naga people as ‘primitive’, brutish and uncivilized’; which he completely refused to accept.
In 2000, we asked them to apologize and withdraw, they have to simply say sorry and take back their words, but they have refused to do so, said Dr Shurhozelie.
Saying the Naga people should learn to judge, Dr Shurhozelie said that if he is found to be a man who goes against his words, a man without morality, then the Naga people should Judge. He added that the NPF, as a regional party, does not tolerate such character as the authors of the ‘Bedrock of the Naga Society’.
He also reiterated his earlier statement to the NEPS that the entry of Jamir in the by-election is a ‘wrong decision’ and asserted that Jamir, by entering the by election would be stripping naked of all the titles that he has earned in his lifetime.
Besides, he also asserted that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has given a new lease of life to the Naga people, and therefore appealed the people to remain with the government and asserted that their decision to remain with the government would be something which they will never regret but which would bring much development in their area.
Lok Sabha MP CM Chang, Roads and Bridges Minister G Kaito Aye also spoke at the rally which was attended by nearly 2000 loyal party workers and supports. Some names of congress defectors from the constituency was also read out and warmly acknowledged at the rally. The 26th Aonglenden A/C goes to polls on May 7, which is just two days away.
