A free veterinary check-up and anti-rabies immunisation drive was conducted in Kohima’s Ward-19 on May 23 under the initiative of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) councillor Medoviu Martin Suohu.

Held under the theme “Caring for animals, building a healthier community” at the Kohima Sahitya Sabha building, the camp treated and vaccinated around 250 pets against rabies.

Speaking to reporters, Suohu said the veterinary check-up programme was part of his election manifesto during the last urban local body elections.

He also announced that a “Free Community Medical Camp” under the theme “Bringing healthcare closer to every family” would be organised on May 28 at the Panchayat Hall in Lower PR Hill, Kohima, from 10 am onwards.

Suohu invited residents of Ward-19 to attend the camp and avail healthcare services and medical treatment facilities.

He thanked the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) and the Urban Primary Health Centre, Porterlane, Kohima, for extending support to the veterinary and upcoming medical camps respectively.

The veterinary team from the office of the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO), Kohima, was led by veterinary surgeon Dr Neisalie Khezhie along with three Veterinary Assistant Surgeons (VAS) and other staff members.

Services provided during the camp included veterinary consultation for pets and domestic animals, anti-rabies vaccination, deworming, and pet care and nutrition guidance.

Chairing the inaugural programme, Oto Angami said the objective of the camp was to provide free veterinary consultation, vaccination guidance and awareness for pet owners and animal caretakers.

“We hope this initiative will encourage responsible pet care and promote compassion towards animals,” he said.

“Today’s programme reflects our shared responsibility towards animal welfare and community health. Healthy animals contribute to a healthier and safer society,” he added.

The programme began with a prayer by Ade Sophie, pastor of NCRC PR Hill, Kohima, while Ward-19 Council chairman Kekhriihol Mekro delivered the welcome address.

Earlier in the day, Suohu also organised free community refreshments at PHQ Junction.

Meanwhile, pet owners appreciated the initiative, saying the camp helped bring essential veterinary care closer to the community and contributed towards rabies control and public safety.
