Man files complaint against police highhandedness

DIMAPUR, MARCH 31 (MExN): One man accused of stealing some household utensils was assaulted by the police on the evening of March 29. The man, who identified himself as Nitoshe (29 years) told media persons that he, was falsely accused of thieving by a woman, one Zamboni. They are both residents of Notun Basti.
The injured party stated that Nitoshe was picked up by the police merely on suspicion at the instigation of Zamboni, while a formal complaint was not even lodged at the concerned police station. Nitoshe said that the woman claimed that the person, whom she supposedly saw stealing her utensils, resembled him. The theft reportedly occurred on the intervening night of March 28 and 29.
He said that on the evening of March 29, some police personnel at the behest of the latter came to his house, without any official warrant and forcefully took him to the West police Station. The police personnel came in a private car, he stated.
Before he was taken to the police station, Nitoshe said that three youths, one of whom was a woman, assaulted him at his residence. The woman was identified as the daughter of Zamboni. On reaching the police station, it was found out that there was no FIR filed against him. However, he said that he was beaten by the officer who took him to the police station.   “I also wish to state that the Police assault on me happened even before any complaint was lodged by the complainant. I was mercilessly beaten by Police Officer Hachio using stick on both my shoulders, my hips and buttocks which all bear marks,” stated a copy of a complaint letter addressed to the Superintendent of Police, Dimapur.
“When I had sought to file a counter FIR for false implication, the police failed to produce any FIR lodged by the complainant.” Only long after the beatings was an FIR lodged against him by the woman, he said. Following which, he immediately lodged a “counter FIR for false accusation”. A second FIR was also lodged against three people who had assaulted him at his residence.
“The fact that I was falsely implicated and held on suspicion was proven when I was produced in the Court on March 30, 2011 and ‘discharged for lack of evidence’.” Nitoshe said that he comes from a poor family and has yet to seek medical attention.
“Therefore, Sir, I request your kind authority to kindly initiate departmental inquiry and take necessary actions against the guilty police officer, in the interest of justice. I also request you to take necessary measures so that I can be examined by Doctors as the Police assault happened on me for no fault of mine. Failure to initiate proper action from your authority, I would be compelled to take the matter to higher authority so that justice would be delivered,” Nitoshe appealed in the letter to the SP.
The case was forwarded by the SP to the SDPO, Niuland for inquiry, it was informed.
