Mokokchung, July 11 (MExN): The Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Mokokchung, has developed 35 vermicompost units in Ungma village under the Community Sustainable Livelihood Development Project (CSLDP) 2025-26, funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), officials said on Saturday.
As part of the initiative, an awareness programme on vermiculture was organised at the District Soil Conservation Office (DSCO) conference hall for selected beneficiaries to familiarise them with scientific management practices.
Following the training, quality vermi worms were distributed to the beneficiaries to enable them to begin organic compost production.
Officials said vermicompost offers significant advantages over traditional farmyard manure (FYM) and other conventional organic inputs, as it improves soil fertility, enhances crop productivity and increases the soil's moisture-retention capacity.
The department encouraged farmers in the district to adopt vermiculture practices to promote environmentally sustainable farming and improve agricultural productivity.
