Nagaland State BJP honoured Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder president Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee through the observance of his 125th Birth Anniversary at BJP Head office Kohima on July 6.
Addressing the gathering, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and BLP leader Yanthungo Patton said “Today, we remember a leader whose life was defined by service, courage and great love for India. His journey reminds us that one person, with clear values and strong determination, can leave a lasting mark on the nation.”
Patton said that Dr Mukherjee believed that the strength of a nation begins with the strength of its people, adding that the later believed that education, discipline, and character were the true foundations of progress.
As one of the youngest Vice-Chancellors of Calcutta University, he brought new ideas to education, Patton said adding that the later encouraged the study of Indian languages and culture along with modern learning.
“He believed that students should know their own history and traditions while preparing for the future. He also supported scientific research, skill development, and opportunities for young people. He understood that education should build confidence, create responsible citizens, and prepare the next generation to serve the country,” Patton said.
Patton said that Dr Mukherjee became India's first Minister for Industry and Supply after Independence, adding “During his time as minister, he helped lay the foundation for industrial development and supported projects that contributed to the country's long-term growth. Many of those institutions continue to serve India even today.”
Throughout his public life, he placed duty above personal interest, Patton said adding that “His decisions reflected what he believed was right for the nation.”
Another major contribution of Dr Mukherjee was the founding of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 and that movement later grew into the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The ideals of service, good governance, and national development continue to guide the party today, Patton said adding that Dr Mukherjee also believed that India's strength comes from its unity.
Stating that Dr Mukherjee respected the many languages, cultures, and traditions that made the country unique, Patton said “For him, unity did not mean that everyone should be the same. It meant that people from different backgrounds should stand together with equal respect, equal opportunity, and a shared commitment to the nation. That idea continues to inspire generations of Indians.”
“As we celebrate his 125th birth anniversary, let us draw inspiration from his example. Let us encourage our young people to value education, work with integrity, respect our democratic institutions, and contribute to the progress of our nation. Every citizen has a role in building a stronger India. Whether through education, public service, business, farming, or any other field, each honest effort helps move the country forward,” Patton said.
