Nagaland state today took a pledge to uphold the democratic traditions of the country and the dignity of free, fair, and peaceful elections.

The pledge was administered by Abhijit Sinha, Principal Secretary, Home Department, Nagaland, during the state-level celebration of the 16th National Voters’ Day (NVD) 2026, held under the theme “My India, My Vote” at Hotel Japfu, Kohima.

The gathering also took a pledge to vote in every election fearlessly and without being influenced by considerations of religion, race, caste, community, language, or any inducement.

Addressing the gathering, Sinha stated that the Election Commission of India (ECI) was constituted on January 25, 1950, a day before India became a Republic following the adoption of the Constitution.

He noted that while the day holds historical importance, National Voters’ Day has been formally observed since 2011, and this year marks its 16th edition, celebrated nationwide, including in Nagaland.

Sinha said NVD serves as a reminder of India’s democratic spirit and the need to nurture it through discussion, consensus, and respect for every individual’s voice.

He urged citizens, particularly youth and first-time voters, to not only enrol in the electoral roll but also actively participate in elections, emphasising that voting is a constitutional duty.

Calling upon voters to exercise their franchise in a free, fearless, and informed manner, Sinha cautioned against inducement and undue influence and encouraged young voters to act as ambassadors of democratic values.

Active and informed participation

The NVD is a reminder of the strength and vitality of the democratic system and reaffirms the collective commitment to the constitutional values of justice, liberty, and equality, which form the bedrock of the Indian Republic, stated Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland, Bhagyashree Banayat.

She highlighted that the theme for 2026 emphasises that democracy does not reside only in institutions and processes, but in the active and informed participation of citizens.

The CEO, Nagaland, also noted that NVD provides an opportunity to acknowledge the dedicated efforts of the ECI and the entire election machinery in the states for working tirelessly to ensure that elections are conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful manner.

The NVD is an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment to a democracy that is value-driven, inclusive, and resilient, she added.

Her message was read out by R. Toshimeren Aier, Deputy CEO, Nagaland, as the latter was attending the India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management in New Delhi.

The event, organised by the Office of the CEO, Nagaland, also featured a message from the Chief Election Commissioner and the presentation of awards, along with the felicitation of first-time voters.
