NFR enhances safety by installing rubberized surfacing at LC gates

MALIGAON, NOVEMBER 24 (MExN): In a bid to improve safety and operational efficiency, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has begun installing rubberized surfacing at Level Crossing (LC) gates in the Lumding-Furkating section. This modernization initiative is part of NFR’s ongoing commitment to enhance safety for both railway and road users across its zone.

A press release issued by CPRO informed that a total of 17 LC gates along the section will benefit from the new rubberized surfacing, with 9 gates already completed by September 2024. The project is expected to be completed by November and December 2024. The rubberized surfacing of these 9 gates comes at a cost of Rs 81 lakh, with Rs 9 lakh allocated per gate. This initiative marks a significant improvement in the safety of road users and the overall efficiency of railway operations.

The rubberized surfacing offers a host of advantages over the traditional method of using paver blocks. The installation process is notably quicker and more efficient, requiring only a two-hour block for laying the panels, with minimal disruption as the speed is restricted to 30 km/h for just two to three hours post-installation. Additionally, it provides a smoother road surface, ensuring better riding comfort for vehicles crossing the tracks.

One of the key benefits of this new surfacing method is the enhanced safety at the level crossings. The elimination of check rails, a common cause of breakage and frequent adjustments, reduces risks significantly. The rubberized surface also minimizes the formation of cake ballast, which can lead to track damage and additional maintenance costs. As a result, critical track components, including Elastic Rail Clips (ERCs), GR pads, and liners, will experience a longer service life.

With 9 gates already completed, the remaining 8 gates are set to further strengthen the safety and operational efficiency of the Lumding-Furkating section.
