NNC/FGN appeals for peace amid continuing violence in Manipur

Dimapur, May 23 (MExN): The NNC/FGN has strongly condemned the resurgence of ethnic violence in Manipur’s Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts, calling for restraint and an immediate end to hostilities.

In a statement issued through its Ministry of Rali Wali Affairs on May 23, the organisation expressed “deepest anguish and categorical condemnation” over the violence that erupted in the early months of 2026 and has continued to spread.

It said the loss of lives, including village volunteers, church leaders and civilians, along with the destruction of homes and properties, was a betrayal of the ideals of peaceful coexistence and harmony among communities.

The organisation condemned the killings reported in Litan-Sareikhong, Mullam and Shongphal, as well as the ambush and killing of three Thadou Baptist leaders - Rev Vunthang Sitlou, Rev Kaigoullun and Pastor Paogoulen - in Kangpokpi district on May 13.

It also condemned the abduction and killing of six Naga hostages identified as Pr Kenpibou, Rev Manu, Phenrongwibou, Phenrilungbou, Dilip and Kaliwangbou, besides the burning of homes affecting several families.

The NNC/FGN described the acts of ambush, abduction and arson as “morally indefensible and politically reckless,” stating that no territorial claim, historical narrative or ethnic assertion could justify bloodshed and destruction.

The organisation called upon all armed groups and individuals to cease hostilities immediately and refrain from actions endangering civilian lives.

It further appealed to both Nagas and Kukis to exercise maximum restraint and avoid reprisal and retaliatory attacks, saying such cycles of violence jeopardised efforts towards peace, reconciliation and coexistence.

Reaffirming its commitment to lasting peace and harmonious relations, the NNC/FGN asserted that any denial or distortion of what it termed the “historical truth” regarding Naga ancestral land would be firmly opposed. The organisation also stated that the Naga people would remain united in solidarity despite “artificially imposed boundaries.”

It further maintained that any politically motivated attack on Nagas would be viewed as an attack on the entire Naga nation and would invite a “decisive and steadfast response.”

Concluding the statement, the NNC/FGN appealed for wisdom and sanity to prevail and called for healing and peace in Southern Nagaland.
