NSF holds seminar on RTE with SCERT

Kohima | June 17 : In order to acquaint themselves with the introduction of Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009, the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) today joined a one-day seminar that held with SCERT director Vipralhou Kesiezie as the resource person at SCERT Conference Hall.
Speaking at the seminar, Kesiezie said the Act provides right to free and compulsory elementary education in a neighbourhood school till Class 8 for children between the age group of 6-14 years. The Act asserts availability of schools within 1 kilometer in every village/habitation.
He also talked on the duties and responsibilities of the appropriate government, local authority, parents, teachers and school authorities. He also informed the NSF officials that the RTE will be affected till Class 10 from next year.
Liking the NSF for taking keen interest to learn about the education aspects in the Naga society as well as the implementation of RTE Act, the director called upon the NSF to act as watch dog and pressure group towards the successful implementation of Act in the State.
He said that they should not allow anyone to misuse the provisions of the Act because it is the right of the student to get educationally qualified and professional teachers and also get free and compulsory education.
Joint Director SCERT taking charge of RTE Act in Nagaland, Kevi Liegise said that the RTE Act is applicable for both Government and government recognized private schools in the State. He however clarified that except in matters of fee and functioning of School Managing Board, which are mandatory for government schools, the private schools are exempted from the purview of the two rules.
During the open discussion, the NSF officials also put forth certain suggestions towards better implementation of the Act and also asserted that during their tour to different districts starting from June 20, they would seek suggestions from the general public and students’ body about the Act to be submitted back to SCERT.
