Intellectuals, social activists and public leaders today expressed their concern over the increase in the population of 'outsiders' in Manipur.
A symposium christened as "Realisation Day-2011" organised by All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) in Imphal, speakers harped on the necessity of protecting the 'indigenous' people of Manipur from being over-shadowed by 'outsiders.'
Moirangthem Manimohan of the Manipur Census Operation presented the statistics of comparison regarding the population figure of various communities residing in the state. As per the data available, the rate of increment of 'outsiders' populations are faster than those of indigenous people of Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, president of Federation for Indigenous Society (FREINDS) Sapamcha Jadumani cautions that the state of Manipur is likely to face the fate of Tripura in the near future if the present trend is not checked. He said the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system as in the case of Mizoram and Nagaland is necessary for Manipur if the indigenous communities of Manipur are to be saved. FREINDS is an organisation spear heading to re-implement ILP system in Manipur.
Prof. Nabakumar of Manipur University opined that the indigenous people of Manipur's inability to compete with outsiders in work skill is another factor which is a negative sign. He said the indigenous people should strive hard to inculcate work culture then only "we can outdo the outsiders".
Almost all the speakers stressed on the need to have ILP system in Manipur.
