Rio on NPF’s victory in by-poll

Kohima | June 11 : Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described the recent Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) victory in the bye-election to the Aonglenden Assembly Constituency as the people’s acceptance of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) policies and programmes under its motto “Development for Peace and Peace for Development.”
Speaking at a programme to felicitate the victorious NPF candidate, Toshipokba Longkumer, at the party’s Kohima Headquarters, Rio said the victory against the veteran Congress leader Dr. S.C jamir will go down in history not only for the Aonglenden constituency but for the NPF and the DAN government and claimed that by choosing the party, the constituency has come out if bondage, referring to the fact that the constituency has been a stronghold of the Congress.
Also, describing the NPF as the champion of the Naga cause, the Chief Minister said the recent victory has also sent waves to all Naga areas that the party is here to stay.
Rio reiterated the party’s commitment to integrate the Nagas socially, emotionally and culturally.
On the Naga political issue, the Chief Minister, while admitting that the Congress and the DAN alliance differ in approaches and policies with regard to the Naga issue, reasserted that the 60 members must come together, hammer out differences and help solve the issue. Towards this, he suggested that Speaker Kiyanilie Peseyie convene a joint meeting of all the legislators at an early date.
NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, while also commenting on the NPF victory in the bye-election, said the victory has daemonstrated the determination of the population for a change and also their inclination to favour young blood. It is indeed a sign of progress in the making of decision of a people, he said and conveyed his appreciation to the electorate of 26 Aonglenden constituency for their wisdom and assured that their decision will certainly push them forward in their all-round development with special bearing on their economic advancement.
Also speaking on the occasion, Toshipokba attributed the victory to the collective effort of the party and particularly thanked party president Dr. Shürhozelie, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Ministers, MLAs and party leaders. He further assured that he will not be a liability to the DAN government and try his best to live up to expectations as a MLA and also fulfil the aspirations of the people of his constituency.
