A North Eastern Council (NEC)-funded infrastructure project at Kohima Orphanage Home, built at a cost of Rs 360.45 lakh, was inaugurated on July 15 by Wangpang Konyak, MLA and Advisor, Department of Social Welfare. The project is mainly designed for boys’ and girls’ dormitories of Kohima Orphanage Home (KOH).

Social Welfare Department Secretary and AHoD Limawabang Jamir and Director Tosheli Zhimomi were present at the inaugural function.

Speaking on the occasion, Konyak lauded the contribution of late Zaputuo Angami, who had established the home for the homeless in 1973, describing her service as ‘divine will.’

“It is not about just giving home but providing care, education and healing touch to homeless children,” he said, commending the orphanage’s work over the years.

He expressed hope that God would continue to guide the institution to serve humanity and create more space for children to grow.

Konyak thanked also the NEC and all stakeholders for the timely completion of the project and expressed confidence that the home would become “a centre of blessings for many.”

‘Your dreams deserve a proper roof’
Delivering keynote address, Limawabang Jamir, Secretary and AHoD, Department of Social Welfare, recalled the acts of kindness and compassion of late Zaputuo Angami, who founded Kohima Orphanage & Destitute Home.

“Over the years, this Home has given a shelter, food, education and above all, love and dignity to over 650 children,” he said.

Some of them have gone on to serve in the Indian Army, some government servants and many settled with families and children of their own- carrying forward in their own homes, the same love that was once given to them here.

Stating that this Home has done extraordinary work often with very modest infrastructure, he said “The building we inaugurate today, made possible through the generous support of the NEC, is not simply a structure. It is the government’s way of saying to every child living here; your dreams deserve a proper roof, a safe room to study in, a clean space to grow up in with dignity.”

Jamir placed on record the social welfare department’s sincere appreciation to the NEC for recognizing the importance of this institution and for funding this new building.

Further, he announced that the social welfare department remains committed to standing beside the Kohima Orphanage Home in the years ahead, “as we continue working together to ensure that no child in our state is left without care, without shelter and without hope.”
