SHGs towards economic empowerment of women

Dimapur, May 10 (MExN): The department of Horticulture conducted training on the utility of Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Dimapur on Tuesday, May 10. A day long programme, it was held at Green Park where around 23 SHGs from Dimapur district participated. The training focused on the technical aspects of running an SHG.  
Deputy Director of Horticulture, Chozhüle, was the resource person. Dwelling on the empowering aspect of SHGs, particularly among women, Chozhüle held that SHG’s in Nagaland have an extensive role to play which will ultimately lead in aiding the overall status of women in the society. With regard to the state, she averred that the performance of the SHGs under the Horticulture department have been progressive.
The deputy director particularly mentioned two SHGs - Dorga SHG from Kohima district and Thi-niu SHG from Zunheboto – which have made commendable progress while winning recognition.
With 1368 SHGs under the department alone comprising of 14753 members, Chozhüle asserted that the department will take every possible initiative to bring more women towards this endeavour. In this direction, she challenged the womenfolk to look beyond household chores while emphasising that the ultimate aim of SHG is the economic empowerment of women. “Many women today have the resources and the potential to make it big. Don’t make yourself a shadow but utilize your resources effectively”, she reminded. She thus, encouraged the womenfolk to be enterprising and help themselves become self-reliant. Emphasising on savings, she vouched for opening of savings accounts which will ultimately come handy.
To further the success of the SHGs, she said that its purpose can only be achieved when all the members partake with sincerity and dedication, and also unity amongst the SHG’s and its members.
