Students refute 'suicide attempt claim'

Dimapur, March 27 (MExN): In relation to the March 24 incident at Nagaland University Campus in Lumami, the Post Graduate Students' Union Lumami (PGSU (L)) has refuted the ‘suicide attempt claim’ made by the authority in concern. It stated that it would take action in the coming days for the defamation against the students and the patient by the authority.
The authority’s claim that the patient attempted to commit suicide is “baseless and an act of foolishness only to bring down the name of Nagaland University”, stated a press note issued by the PGSU president Limameren N. Longkumer and general secretary  T. Tohuka Achumi.
The union in the note has demanded that the FIR filed against the students over the damage caused to the medical centre be withdrawn and the Vice Chancellor (VC) Kannan give public apology to the students and to the Naga people for defamation.
PGSU (L) Prez & gen secy: We did not lead the mob and destroyed M.I room
Supporting its stand, the union in the note stated: “…with much hesitation the students  have to resort to the destruction of M.I room as it was an attempt to bring the V.C Kannan to the sense that the students' community will not compromise the denial of their fundamental rights as a central University students'. The students' also opine that the M.I room which they have destructed was of no use to the students' as it never meet the needs of the students' so the students' were compelled to start throwing stones at the M.I room to demand the new modernized M.I room as per the U.G.C provision.”
In addition, the PGSU (L) has condemned the general secretary of NUNTSA, C. Mhonbemo Lotha’s allegations against the PGSU (L) that president Limameren N. Longkumer and general secretary T. Tohuka Achumi led the mob and destroyed the M.I room.
The union in the note has questioned the NUNTSA general secretary that “what hatred he has against the PGSU (L) President and Gen. Secretary as the relation between the NUNTSA and PGSU (L) office is good and mutual.” Also, from where did the NUNTSA general secretary received the report that “President and Gen. Secy PGSU (L) led the mob and gave the eye witness report in the media as NUNTSA Gen. Secy C. Mhonbemo was not present at the M.I room on the night of 24th March 2011”.
Concerning the allegation, the PGSU (L) has demanded the general secretary of NUNTSA for an apology statement through the “same media where he committed his foolishness for mutual relation between NUNTSA Gen. Secy and the PGSU (L)”.
Moreover, the PGSU (L) has also appealed the students' bodies headed by the NSF and ENSF to condemn and look into the matter of the “V.C highhandedness attitude towards the NU students”. It has also appealed to the Governor of Nagaland, Nagaland Government and the NGOs of Nagaland to help the students in finding a permanent solution "for lifting NU status in every area at par with other central universities".

NSF laments over NU rampage

Dimapur, March 27 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) expresses its serious concern over the ‘unpleasant incident’ that occurred in the Nagaland University headquarters of Lumami campus on March 24. University students had gone on a rampage and destroyed a medical centre alleging negligence of the university’s services.
After examining the cause for the escalation of situation that led to the rampage the NSF has slammed the authorities of the medical establishment of the University for their ‘Negligence of duty’.
A resolution between the university’s authority and the Post Graduate Students’ Union of Lumami campus was taken in a joint meeting on November 26, 2010. The resolution assured providing 24 hours medical services and facilities. The resolution was apparently never enforced by the NU authority.
The federation however expressed regret over the damages caused by the students and has appealed to the Nagaland University authorities to withdraw the FIRs at the earliest. One, for vandalizing university property and another and for alleged accidental ingestion of Formaldehyde solution ‘attempted suicide’.
The NSF has urged the authorities to extend best services in providing basic amenities to encourage the students to perform their best in their academic disciplines.
