Mokokchung, May 5 (MExN): As election campaigning for the 26th Aonglenden Assembly Constituency comes to an end today, the NPCC Election Campaign Convener, K Therie (former Finance Minister and veteran Congress politician) alleged the involvement of underground cadres in this by-election and strongly appealed refrain from involving in the ‘constitutional state election’.
Addressing a press conference at Whispering Winds hotel here today, the veteran Congressman asserted that the involvement of UGs won’t make any difference this election, because the people cannot be cowed down like in the past. Highly reliable sources have also confirmed the involvement of underground cadres in the constituency.
“We appeal to Naga National workers to refrain from involving in the constitutional state election. Going against Congress in the state and negotiating with Congress at Delhi may not go well as we are all human beings,” said K Therie, “Patience and tolerance will bear fruit in finding solution and not confrontation.”
On being pressed about the nature of the UGs involvement, the veteran politician disclosed that Congress workers have been called through phones to come to some locations; once they reach there the cadres make them sign an ‘agreement’ and forced to say that they have gone “fishing”. “We don’t what the conditions they were made to sign,” said the NPCC Election Campaign convener, but he maintained that this time round the involvement of UGs will not make any difference because the people are aware of their right. Nonetheless Therie expressed his strong concern about peaceful polls on May 7 if the UGs should disturb the polling on the day. On being queried which faction was calling the Congress, Therie diplomatically said that though they have ‘no definite report’, yet intelligence sources confirms that it is the NSCN (IM) faction.
Therie takes a dig at NPF leaders’ statement
The NPCC Election Campaign Convener for 26th Aonglenden A./C, K Therie took a dig at the statements of NPF leaders at the NPF public meeting at Town Hall on Wednesday, and said that the statement of NPF leaders in the Mokokchung yesterday rally did not pronounce any vision statement of future.
“They were trying to recall the past and condemn Dr SC Jamir’s achievement, not knowing they are enjoying the present because of the past achievement of Dr SC Jamir and his associate pioneers of the state. I am happy that NPF was seriously protecting Article 371A which Dr SC Jamir and his colleague brought about,” said the veteran politician.
Advising that the NPF should update itself with reality and be grateful to ‘reality performers’, Therie reminded NPF not to forget that it was Congress Party that demanded from GOI to offer “talk without pre-condition” to Naga Undergrounds since 1989. He also pointed out that it was Late Rajiv Gandhi who offered talk without pre condition at Dimapur Local Ground on May 19, 1991 and was officially offered by Late Sri PV Narasimha Rao the then Prime Minister of India on February 22, 1996. Besides, he reminded that it was Dr. SC Jamir, Former Chief Minister who officially announced Ceasefire in 1997 effecting.
However, Therie lamented that, even after giving Ceasefire Agreement to the state, the NPF has failed to provide security to life and property to people adding that the highest number of factional killing and clashes occurred during DAN Government rule.
“The Congress has always said Nagaland Political Problem is human problem and need to resolve through human approach. Neither the Congress Party nor individuals has obstructed settlement in all these 14 years long negotiation. We have rather urged GOI to settle the problem early,” said Therie.
Congress stands for inclusive solution
Saying that the Congress understands the solution to the Naga political issue needs consensus and cooperation from all stake holders, Therie maintained that the Congress has constant policy, in matters of finding political solution.
“Congress party policy is to secure consensus to find honourable and acceptable solution. Solution has to be inclusive and not exclusive,” said Therie, “Exclusive solutions are not solutions they are divisive forces. NPF leaders should remember their commitment to secure negotiated settlement to the Indo-Naga political problem.”
Taking a dig at Lok Sabha MP, CM Chang who purportedly commented that “political solution will be solved during UPA Government” at Mongsenyimti Moatsu festival on May 1, 2011, Therie said NPF also understand that they need money from Congress led UPA Govt at Delhi to run the deficit financing of the state. “We would caution NPF to be careful in their statement when they are supporting UPA at Delhi to get fund,” he said in this regard. Saying that regional party has achieved any mile stone worth mentioning either in politic or economy, Therie asserted that what the NPF have been talking in politic is different from what they do governing.
“NPF have dubious record of achieving in systemizing of corruption in its 8 years rule at all levels and individuals have become rich with public funds. They are responsible for dividing Nagaland society into fractions,” he maintained.
Nonetheless, he expressed happiness that “absolute senior citizens, thinkers, intellectuals and youths” are for change and have sympathy on INC Candidate Dr SC Jamir.
“The Congress appeal to restrain from been misled by temporary monetary benefit. Bribes will surely bring misfortune one day in life, for living God that we believe has promised that vengeance is his,” he added.
It may be noted here that 26th Aonglenden A/C goes for by-polls on May 7.
