DIMAPUR | JUNE 18 : The Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) and state Forest department have come to an understanding with regard to NTTU’s earlier demand for transfer of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest. According to NTTU sources, the demand of NTTU was resolved at a meeting of Forest officials and NTTU members held in Kohima on Friday.
“The Forest officials have assured us to look into the genuine problems faced by timber traders and tree farmers,” an NTTU official said. However, the member did not specify whether the demand for removal of the PCCF has been accepted.
It may be mentioned that NTTU had demanded immediate transfer or replacement of the present PCCF, alleging that restriction on movement of timber outside the state was due to the PCCF’s “negligence.”
Earlier, NTTU in a press release state that transportation of timber by wagons had come to a halt for nearly one year as the PCCF did not give any interest to sort out the problem with the Government of India, though all his subordinate officers were doing their best considering the plight of the thousands of families whose livelihood depend on timber and
its by-products.
