UTNC objects to India’s border fencing between Indo-Myanmar pillars 172 & 173

Dimapur, November 18 (MExN): The United Tangshang Naga Council (UTNC), along with associated Tangshang Naga organisations, has expressed strong objection to the Government of India’s border fencing activities between Indo-Myanmar Border Pillars No. 172 and 173, located within Nanyun Township.

In a statement released received here, the UTNC maintained that  the fencing project falls within Tangshang Naga-inhabited territory and disregards the presence and identity of the indigenous Naga people, who have lived in the area since time immemorial.

The council described the construction of physical barriers as an act that threatens the unity of the Naga people and constitutes “psychological oppression.”

The UTNC noted that, while international borders were demarcated only in recent decades following the formation of India and Myanmar, Naga communities on both sides of the border have continued to live peacefully, maintaining their shared identity, customs, and traditions.

Any attempt to divide the Naga people, the council said, “will not intimidate the Tangshang Nagas,” and their unity cannot be erased by any authority.

The council urged the Indian government to immediately stop and withdraw all fencing activities along the border and to recognise and respect the indigenous Naga population on both sides.

It also called on authorities to avoid political arrangements that divide the community and to take responsibility for any consequences that may arise if the project continues.

The statement was signed by the UTNC, the Naga Tradition, Literature and Culture Committees of Nanyun and Pangsau Townships, the Tangshang Naga Baptist Churches Council (TNBCC), and the Tangshang Naga Students Association (TNSA).
